TCAG celebrates 1,000 sequencing runs with latest sequencing technology
The Centre for Applied Genomics (TCAG) at SickKids recently celebrated 1,000 sequencing runs using two of the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 instruments, which have been the workhorses of TCAG’s sequencing work over the past several years. TCAG is a hub for groundbreaking research in genomics and supports research projects from across a wide variety of disciplines, from biomedical research to areas as diverse as agriculture and agri-food, translational diagnostics, bioinformatics, environmental sciences and biodiversity.
The runs represent more than 31,000 samples, including over 15,000 human genomes and over 10,000 RNA samples. Notably, the runs contributed to half of the 10,000 genomes sequenced by HostSeq, the Host Genome Sequencing Initiative, which is led by CGEn and is developing a national genomics databank that will support understanding of the genomic architecture of the host response to COVID-19.
“Genomics will underpin the next generation of scientific discoveries, transforming the speed at which we conduct research and how we uncover new breakthroughs that can potentially lead to novel treatments individualized to patients' genetics,” says Dr. Stephen Scherer, Director of TCAG and Chief of Research at SickKids. “Ahead of TCAG's 25th anniversary later this year, I’m incredibly proud of the cutting-edge genomics work happening every day at SickKids.”
